Mbok Jamu (three close up); Southern Ice porcelain, Batik; unglazed; 5 pieces on 38x82cm frame; 2012
As an Indonesian living in Australia, I wanted to explore my Indonesian cultural heritage using skills that I have acquired while living in Australia. Mbok Jamu is a seller of Indonesian traditional herbal drink, jamu. She typically wears a traditional Indonesian kebaya and carries a bamboo basket containing bottled jamu strapped to her back. My exploration of the Indonesian/Australian influence extends to the materials used in this work: Australian Southern Ice porcelain and Indonesian batik textile.
