‘Threads of Yesterday’: A Project for Leichhardt Council, 2011
After World War II, a large number of Italians migrated to Australia to escape their war-torn homeland in search of a new life. This design acknowledges the physical and cultural distance travelled by Italian migrants to Australia. The woven map documents the common shipping route from Europe to Australia through the Suez Canal. When tensions in Northern Africa restricted access to the canal, ships took an alternate route via the Cape of Good Hope, at the Southern tip of Africa.
