Shadow on the Wall [inside cover]

Shadow on the Wall is an illustrated book for children with a parent who suffers from depression. It follows the life of a young girl as she tries to come to terms with the ‘Shadow’ that has taken hold of her mother. The book aims to create a line of communication between children and parents who are affected by depression. This project was very personal to me as I knew it would reflect my experiences and undoubtedly the experiences of many other children and adults alike. Whilst undertaking this journey, I discovered that many of the people in my life had hid the fact that they too had a parent or sibling who suffered from depression during their childhoods. What was interesting to me was how readily they opened up to me once they knew about my own experience. Willingness to share memories that for some were so painful was what inspired me to develop a book as a design solution. The ability to relate to a persons story was crucial because it highlighted how we as a society do not want to feel alone when dealing with something as difficult as depression. In this illustration, the young girl is introduced.
